Stila Stay all Day 10-in-1 HD Bronzing Beauty Balm - review

I bought this bronzing beauty balm as a mixer to darken some of the bases I own that are too light for my skin in the warmer months, or are just bad colour matches, and I'm so glad I did.

This product has meant that any bases I haven't been using because the colour isn't quite right are now back in circulation, so I'm getting the most from the products I own and have (temporarily!) stopped looking for new foundations.

I was new to Stila until last Christmas, when I used Santa's Mecca gift card to pick up a few products. So far my experience of the brand has been a good one, and I must start reviewing the Stila products I have because I think the brand is definitely worth looking into. It's not the cheapest line on the market, but it's certainly not the most expensive one either, and you can find good prices online if you're prepared to shop around.

Above I've swatched it in direct sunlight, and below in natural light. In each photograph, I've left an unblended patch on the left and a partially blended one in the centre, and I've blended it out on the right. You can see that it's quite a strong colour when first applied, but it sheers out pretty well.

Below I've blended it out. I've seen that some lasses can wear this on its own - I can't because it's too orange/dark for me, but it's a great colour for mixing.

Below I've applied it on my cheeks (it's a bit orange for me and I wouldn't normally wear it like that but I have for review purposes). I've also mixed it with my BB cream and applied the mixed bit to my forehead, and the BB alone to the rest of my face. You can see I'm paler below my eyebrows: I wanted to show how using it as a mixer can add warmth: my forehead is a much nicer colour.

Verdict

As mentioned, I'm really glad I bought this because it's meant that I've been able to use the BB/CC creams and tinted moisturisers I'd cast aside because they weren't a good colour match. I've always had issues finding good colour matches - I'm either between colours (meaning I've had to buy two of the same product and mix them), or I find a good colour match but it's only suitable for a few months a year because my skintone changes so much in the different seasons. I don't need to do that anymore!

It's a lightweight product that has no greasy feel, and it applies and blends well so it's easy to avoid streaking. It has mixed nicely with the various different bases I've tried it with and although it looks a bit orange on its own, it doesn't when mixed.

I did try wearing this on its own but had to apply another BB cream over the top because it was the wrong colour; the result was that the BB cream looked a better colour, so you don't necessarily have to mix this but can apply it as a primer for your base (whether powder, cream or liquid) to make you look a bit warmer in a natural way.

You could also wear this as a spot bronzer, depending on your colouring. It's not a good bronzer for me in winter (though it may well be in summer), but I didn't buy it for that so I'm not bothered.

It's nicely pigmented but it sheers out well and you can build colour if you want to without looking overdone. It has a tiny amount of shimmer that doesn't show up much on my face, just adds a nice glow and gives my face a touch of extra dimension.

It does feel a little dry when you apply it on its own but it's not drying to the skin and it has a slight blurring effect when it comes to pores and fine lines. Plus it wears well throughout the day and I've noticed that it slightly extends the wear of my base product when I apply this to the whole face first.

On the product claims: it doesn't feel particularly nourishing but it feels nice enough on; it does give a sun-kissed glow and evens out skintone; it is a good base for makeup and I do think it hides imperfections; and it does give a smooth coverage.

In sum, I really like this and am so glad I bought it. It's one of those products I can see myself reaching for every day, whether I use it as a primer or a mixer for my base. If you have issues finding bases that match like I do, I recommend this product.
