St Tropez Gradual Tan in Shower Lotion - review

We received this product in Marie Claire's Spring Edit of The Parcel (reviewed here) and I could tell just by reading the instructions that it was going to be one of the most annoying products I've ever used.

I was not wrong. You're meant to wash yourself in the shower, turn the water off and apply this, then wait for three minutes before rinsing - and every time I use it, I'm so annoyed that I can't wait to finish the damn thing!

Presumably St Tropez did its research before developing this product, so they must have thought there would be a market for it - but I for one would much prefer a self-tanning cream that I can apply as my body lotion, rather than something like this.

Anyhoo. Let's have a look.

St Tropez claims/product details:
  • Just three minutes as part of your daily regime
  • A convenient way to build a sun-kissed, gradual glow
  • Provides up to 24 hour moisturisation
  • A unique streak-free formulation that activates on clean, wet skin, in three minutes flat
  • Allows you to minimise grooming time and enjoy an even and natural looking glow, without the fuss and time traditionally associated with tanning
  • Perfect for those with busy lifestyles, or if you're simply looking for a low maintenance all year round glow
  • With sweet almond oil, it’s also clinically proven to hydrate the skin for up to 24 hours, so there’s no need to moisturise afterwards
  • Simply apply daily to build your depth of tan to suit you
  • To use: fully cleanse and wash in a warm shower; with the shower off, generously apply the product in circular motions with your hands to wet skin to create an even coverage (wash palms after application); wait three minutes; fully rinse off with warm water only; gently dry yourself, before getting dressed (after showering, the self-tan actives will naturally start to work, developing gradually and deepening with regular reapplication within the shower)
  • RRP $39.99 for 200ml

Above is what the product looks like. You can see the colour of my inner arm before application.

Below is the colour of my arm after application. I can't see an immediate difference, but I have noticed a slight one over time.

Verdict

Obviously I don't love this product because, as mentioned, I find it a hassle to use and would much prefer a normal tanning lotion that applies like a body cream.

Note that I have seen other reviewers say that they love the idea of this product (so not everyone agrees that the application is annoying) - it's just that they can't get it to build much of a tan.

After reading a bundle of reviews, I saw that some comments noted a trick they had learned: instead of applying it when you're wet, lightly towel dry yourself first. Then apply it for four or five minutes instead of three.

I tried this trick last night and I definitely saw a change in the colour of my skin, whereas before I'd barely seen any change when used as directed.

The good news about that trick is: you can spend the time cleaning the bathroom and shower a little, since we try to do that at least once a week while we're in my parent's house (moving into our new joint this week - huzzah!), but I'm sure you could find other things to do in that time if you don't need to do that ; ).

The one downside to using the trick is that you go through the product more quickly, which is actually not a downside for me since I don't love the shower application method and prefer standard tanning creams!

I have also seen one reviewer say that this product only works to a certain level of tan, which might not be dark enough for everyone, and I suspect that will be me.

Also, on the moisturising factor, it does feel that way when applied - but I still apply my normal cream after using the product because I feel like I need to - though maybe that's because I generally exfoliate before using this product so it feels drier than usual.

All in all, I give this product 2.5 stars. I don't like the application method, but at least the product works - especially if you don't use it as directed and instead use the trick.

What I might even do tonight is wash down my body gently in the bathroom (not the shower room), so I'm already clean before I take a shower and have already applied the product for four to five minutes.

Have you tried this product? Let me know what you think.
