SkinYoga Almond & Orange Face Scrub - review

You may remember that I recently reviewed the Oats & Roses Face Wash from this little trio of samples and I wasn't impressed with it at all (see review here), which made me treat the other two SkinYoga samples with suspicion.

Happily this Almond & Orange Face Scrub is much better than the face wash, so let's just call that a bad product and move on. Having said this, the scrub hasn't wowed me and it's not one I would buy - but unlike the face wash I'm not suffering when I use it (ha, but you know what I mean ; )).

I do love the SkinYoga packing though and I'm planning to keep the bottles once I've finished the products.

I'm not sure what I'll do with them yet but it'd be fun to fill them with coloured sand for example and leave them sitting on the windowsill in the bathroom. Let me know if you have any ideas about what you can do with jars like this that you want to keep : )

Anyhoo. The product!

SkinYoga claims/product details:
  • The goodness of almonds and oranges work wonders to cleanse and repair your skin
  • This scrub hydrates and exfoliates mildly to give a smooth skin and a flawless complexion
  • You will be able to tell the higher quality of the ingredients on your very first use
  • To use for cleansing: take approximately 1/2 teaspoon of scrub powder in cupped hand and add sufficient water to make a thick paste; apply to face, avoiding eye area, and massage gently into skin; rinse thoroughly; follow with moisturiser
  • As a mask: prepare and apply as for cleansing and leave for 15-20 minutes or until skin begins to feel tight; rinse and follow with moisturiser
  • RRP $25 AUD for 50g

Verdict

I'm not a huge fan of products that you need to mix with water before use because they can be messy and the whole mixing process is an extra step that I often don't have the time or energy for. Nevertheless, I don't notice this when the product is really good - but I do when the product isn't amazing, as this one unfortunately is not.

As you can see it's a bright orange powder and it indeed smells like almonds. One thing to note is that, when mixed with water, it doesn't form a paste - at least not as I understand the term. What it does is form little clumps that sit in yellowed water, which doesn't make for easy application.

As compared to my Alpha-H Gentle Daily Exfoliant, for example (reviewed here), that product does indeed form a paste and for this reason it's very easy to apply and use because you're not left with clumps all over your face and watery bits that slide off your hands. This product is a little more fiddly than that - something to be aware of.

I've tried it both as a mask and as an exfoliant. I didn't love it as a mask so I only did that once: it didn't mix and apply well due to the clumping issue mentioned above, so some parts of my face had product on them and some didn't. When it dried down, I found the tightness in my skin to be on the uncomfortable side and the result wasn't anything to write home about, so I didn't try it again.

Due to the consistency when mixed, the product fares better as a scrub because you can move the clumps around and get an effect from them across the whole surface area of your face. It does indeed exfoliate the skin, leaving it looking a bit brighter and feeling a little smoother after use - as you would expect anything with little grains in it to do. But the effect isn't amazing and the hassle of using the product means it's not something I look forward to using: I use it because I have it.

In sum, this is an ok exfoliant but it's not one I would buy due to how fiddly and clumpy it is. Let me know if you've used any SkinYoga products and whether you have any recommendations.

When it comes to morning versus night exfoliation, you're going to reap the best benefits from exfoliating in the morning time. This is due to the oils your skin produces overnight. You'll be able to more smoothly remove all impurities, dead skin, and oils, when you exfoliate in the morning, rather than at night.
