Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream - review

We received this product in our Autumn 2016 Marie Claire Ageless Parcels (reviewed here). I was super excited to see it because I'd just run out of my night cream and overnight treatment, so I needed a replacement.

I first used this cream for six weeks and during that time my skin became really dry and flaky - mainly around my mouth and nose - but it had also become a little more plumped in other areas, and I'd developed a few blemishes along my chin that hadn't been there before. I wasn't sure if this product was the culprit for any of those things, so I decided to give it a rest for a couple of weeks before trying again.

I've now been using it for another month and can say that the product does dry out my skin for the first few nights (I use it every night as the last step in my skincare routine) because the flaky skin happened again, although not as badly this time and my skin adjusted quickly.

As for the other stuff, I think it does plump the skin overnight but I can't say for sure whether the product was responsible for the dots on my chin, but more on all that below.

Garnier claims/product details:
  • Fights signs of fatigue for more rested, younger looking skin
  • Helps de-tire skin and fight the signs of ageing while you sleep
  • Inspired by the huge trend in sleeping packs in Asia, has the restorative power of a mask with the lightness of a cream
  • Sensual, fresh and light
  • The intelligent memory-foam texture takes a toning, elastic form, that can hold droplets of oils and active ingredients within the cream’s texture
  • Upon contact, the formula is attracted to the skin, providing great coverage and helping the active ingredients penetrate for deep hydration
  • Concentrated in pure anti-ageing essential oils, the formula diffuses deeply into the skin to boost its recovery mechanisms and cellular energy
  • After 28 nights the skin is deeply regenerated
  • Smoother, plumper and with greater capacity to resist fatigue
  • RRP $19.99 AUD for 50ml

There's what it looks like below.

And again:

Verdict

I reckon this isn't a bad product for some overnight hydration, although I personally wouldn't recommend it due to the drying issue I've experienced - but I am still using it so I obviously don't mind it that much. Plus it may well work better for normal or oily skin that isn't particularly sensitive, as mine can be.

The texture is interesting - quite thick and indeed foamy/spongy as claimed - and it does remind me of a Korean collagen cream I once received from Memebox, so I wasn't surprised to see that it's inspired by Asian skincare products.

I'm not sure if you can tell from the above photo, but the texture is almost like jelly. I personally don't mind this because I feel like it's really coating my skin and locking in moisture, but it may take some getting used to for those who haven't tried anything like it before.

Despite the odd texture, it does spread and absorb well, and it has a cooling sensation when applied that I really enjoy. It smells a little like champagne to me but the scent isn't unpleasant, though it does linger so be aware of that if you don't like fragranced products.

My skin feels hydrated and nourished when I apply this, and the cream does have a slightly tacky finish that not everyone will like. Having said this, if you're applying it as an overnight product, the finish doesn't really matter because it's gone by morning and you don't need to worry about what your makeup will look like over the top.

I wondered why a product that's hydrating might be drying out my skin, so I had a look at Paula's Choice and apparently it contains lavender oil and other fragrant ingredients that can irritate the skin. It also contains denatured alcohol (the bad kind for skin), and I reckon that's why the product dries me out because alcohol and my skin don't mix.

As mentioned, I do get a plumping effect from this and my skin looks pretty healthy and feels soft and smooth by morning (dry patches aside). As for the bumps I got along my chin when I first used this, I can't say for sure whether the product caused those but I have seen others complain of something similar so I'm not ruling it out.

Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if the product was clogging pores because it is so thick, and if you want to use it, I recommend using a really small amount because I imagine that too much of anything that coats the skin so thickly and locks in moisture like this does could be responsible for congestion.

All in all, I don't hate this product but I don't mind it either. It's not something I would go out and buy, but for now I'll take the good with the bad. My dryness has settled down (as have the blemishes) and my skin is looking and feeling pretty good, so I'll keep using the tub until it's gone.

Have you tried this? Let me know what you think if so : )
