Antipodes Chia & Kiwi Seed Superfood Serum - review

If I had to pick one skincare item that I couldn't live without, I think serums would be it. I reckon I can get away with a hoh-hum moisturiser, but if I'm not using a good serum, that's when my skin really suffers.

Anyhoo. This offering from Antipodes is fantastic. I received it in my first ever box from Maslow & Co (reviewed here), and I'm loving it so much that I can see myself coming back to it again and again.

Antipodes claims/product details:

  • Chia seed is full of essential fatty acids and antioxidants
  • Kiwi seed oil is a rich source of vitamins c and e, and omega 3
  • Creates a natural barrier to lock in moisture, reduce inflammation, stabilise oily skin and deliver a youthful glow

  • RRP $49.99 AUD for 30ml, but do shop around

Verdict

This is a fantastic serum and it's well-priced at $50. Indeed, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anything this good in that price range, and as soon as Priceline has one of its forty per cent off sales, I'll be stalking the Antipodes counter to stock up on this and perhaps try a couple of other things from the brand's range.

It's a yellow coloured serum that's oily in texture and unfortunately it has a fishy scent that does bother me, but since the product itself is so good, I'm prepared to hold my nose and overlook that because the pay-off for my skin far outweighs my distaste over the product's scent.

Despite its oily texture, this isn't a heavy serum and it's one of those oils that sinks beautifully into the skin, rather than sitting on top and failing to be completely absorbed. You know those products that just feel like they're doing good things for your skin? This is absolutely one of those: my skin seems to sigh in relief whenever I use this, and the product indeed feels like 'superfood' for the skin.

Now I do have dry skin that's suffering from the cooler weather and pregnancy combined at the moment (not a good mix!), so an oily serum like this suits me well and I can easily use it twice a day without feeling that I'm overdoing it. If you have oily skin, however, you may prefer to use this only at night, but don't shy away from it because it's an oil - I suspect that you'll find it isn't too heavy so it's worth testing the product, no matter your skin type.

I've been using this since I received it, so just over six weeks ago now. To start with I used it both day and night, but since I'm enjoying it so much and it's exactly what my dry skin needs, I decided to ration it and I now use it only in the evening. I do think it's better suited for night application due to its richness, but if you're dry like me, you can absolutely get away with more frequent use.

What I've noticed while using this is that it's really helped with those dry, flaky patches I was getting around my mouth and nose, which have all but vanished now. It's also calmed down any redness and irritation, and it's done this even after I dropped the applications to once a day only.

My skin looks and feels in much better condition than it was before I started using the product, so I definitely recommend it if you have parched skin and need something hydrating.

I also don't feel that it clogs pores - despite its richness - and I haven't been getting more breakouts since I started using it. If anything, my skin has become more clear. While I don't think this product removed my breakouts (I have other products for that), I do think it's helped stop any new ones from forming because it doesn't congest the skin.

All in all, this is a fantastic product that meets its claims and I absolutely recommend it. It's not overpriced and I like it enough that I want to try more from Antipodes' range, so stay tuned for more Antipodes reviews because I'll be camping out overnight at Priceline to make sure I'm first in the door when they have their next big sale.

A gorgeous product.
