Maybelline Master Strobing Stick Illuminating Highlighter - review and swatches

I was lucky enough to be sent this product to review recently and I was looking forward to testing it because I'd seen some good reviews on youtube and I haven't had much luck with cream products from pharmacy/drugstore brands so I wanted to see how this fared.

Fortunately I can confirm that it's a good product and it's not a bad starting point if you're new to makeup or just want to try something different without spending a tonne.

The packaging is a simple affair: it's a little thicker/larger than a lipstick bullet and it functions in the same way. You twist it up to reveal the product and twist it back down when you're done.

This comes in two shades: 100 (Light, Iridescent) and 200 (Medium, Nude Glow). I received the light shade and I think the other one would probably work better on my medium colouring, but this one works fine too.

Maybelline claims/product details:
  • Offers a radiant, dewy glow
  • Lightweight, creamy formula contains micro-fine pearls for a subtle sheen
  • Stick design is easy to use and offers results in one stroke
  • RRP $15.95 AUD for 6.8g, but do shop around

Please note that the little bumps you may be able to see are because I'm cold, not because the formula is grainy ; )

Verdict

I'm super pleased I was sent this product to review because I mightn't have tried it otherwise: cream formulas can be dicey at best and I haven't had a lot of luck with creams when it comes to pharmacy brands in particular.

Happily this product surprised me in the best of ways. It's a cream-to-powder formula that has no scent and it hasn't irritated my dry, sensitive skin.

It applies beautifully and blends well, and it offers a natural, believable highlight that gives a sheen rather than covering your face with chunky glitter. If you apply too much product, don't worry because it sheers out to almost nothing if you want it to - so it's hard to go overboard with this. I personally love that in a highlighter!

Shade 100 is a nice pinky pearl that should suit lighter skintones in particular. The golden shade would have been a better match (I think) for my medium skin, but this does work well too. It can look a little frosty on me in some lights, however, so I need to be careful not to over-apply it.

I think this looks extra nice as an inner-corner highlight on the eyes and it's a product that will work best for those who don't want their highlighter to be super metallic or visible on the skin.

My only issue with the product is that it doesn't last too well (just a few hours) on its own, but you can improve longevity by setting it with a powder.

All in all, this is a really great budget option if you're after a natural highlight and it's definitely worth testing next time you're in the chemist.
