Sunday Riley Blue Moon Tranquillity Cleansing Balm - review

My husband bought me this cleansing balm for my birthday because I'd been dying to try it since it came out, and he said I should get something special that I wouldn't normally buy. Thanks husband ; )

While Sunday Riley has been on my radar for a while and I've tested plenty of the brand's products, this is the first one I've actually bought. This is partly because Sunday Riley doesn't come cheap and partly because I've found other effective skincare that I like just as much and that costs less.

But since this cleansing balm came with change from $100 and I didn't have anything else like it at the time, I decided to bite the bullet. While I do really like it, I don't think you need to spend this much for a decent cleansing balm and I probably wouldn't buy it again. More on that below.

Verdict

This is a beautiful product and I am glad I bought it, but as mentioned above, I probably wouldn't buy it again because I've used cleansing balms that I like just as much and that come with a smaller price tag.

It's a pale blue balm that initially feels quite hard to the touch when you pop your finger in the tub, but it softens quickly and spreads easily across the skin so you only need a little each time.

The first thing I noticed when using this is that the texture isn't completely smooth: some gentle grainy bits are in there that have a very mild exfoliating effect and feel nice when massaged into the skin. Do note that these grains aren't rough at all so I wouldn't worry about them if you have sensitive skin, and they melt away as you massage the product in.

I've tried this as a makeup remover and it does dissolve makeup well without too much rubbing, and when I add water and wipe the product away with a cloth, my face does look and feel clean. It doesn't completely remove my mascara but it does a better job than most products, and I never expect anything to fully remove my mascara anyway because my lashes are pretty hard to clean, so the product doesn't lose points on that front.

Note, though, that I prefer not to use this as a makeup remover because I'd rather use something this fancy as a skin cleanser, so I use something else to wipe away the gunk from my face and clear my skin to receive the benefits from this product.

Also, because I have a few oil/balm cleansers open at the moment, my favourite use for this product is as a hydrating mask. On any morning when I wake up and my dry skin feels even more dry than usual, I cleanse it gently with something else and then whack this on for 20 minutes. Once removed, my skin looks and feels more hydrated and it no longer feels uncomfortable. Not all oil and balm cleansers manage to have a lasting effect once removed, so I do think this is a decent product.

As for claims: yes it's calming and hydrating; yes it's good for dry, dehydrated and stressed skin; yes it melts into the skin and does a good job of cleansing; and yes it's nourishing and works well as a hydrating mask. I also think that it does help improve skin texture because it targets any dry patches I may have, and it helps with skin clarity because it doesn't clog pores or cause me to break out.

So in sum, I do think this is a beautiful product that generally meets its claims and it's not the most expensive Sunday Riley product out there so it's a good introduction to the range if you're keen to try something - especially because the tub is so big and a little goes a long way.

Having said this, the product hasn't blown my socks off and it would want to at $72 a pop, so this isn't a repurchase for me and I'll stick to less expensive cleansing balms when my tub is done because this product hasn't defined itself enough for me to warrant the outlay.

Lovely but pricey.
